Access Digital

Our NetTeller vendor, Jack Henry and Associates, recently announced the retirement of its NetTeller platform, effective 1/15/2025. Because of this development, SeaComm will partner with Access Softek, our current mobile app provider, to implement a new and robust, updated experience called Access Digital.

We are happy to share with you that all of the features you have come to depend on within the NetTeller platform, will continue to be available to you; and thrilled to share some of the newer features as the sunset date gets closer. The biggest change will be that Access Digital is a member centric system, versus an account centric system that we currently have.

What does that mean? Simply, when you enrolled through NetTeller, your username and password would only grant you access to a single account number, meaning it is account centric. If you are associated with multiple account numbers, a username and password would need to be set up on each.

With Access Digital, your future enrollment will be member centric. It will allow you to view all accounts that you are connected to, whether primary or joint. All accounts tied to your social security number will show in one visual platform, using a single username and password!

As the transition date gets closer, further information and instructions on how to navigate enrollment with Access Digital will be provided. A great option to remain current on important information and updates, is to subscribe to SeaComm’s text messaging program. Two easy options to subscribe:

Text the keyword SEACOMM to (844) 573-2533 -or- visit our website home page, enter your mobile number into the online form provided and click “Submit Now”.

By participating, you agree to the terms and conditions provided.

Great Place to Work Certification Day!

We are proud to be Certified™ by Great Place to Work® as elected by our employees for a fourth year. This prestigious award is based entirely on what current employees say about their experience working at SeaComm. This year, 90% of all employees said it’s a great place to work, compared to 57% of employees at a typical U.S. - based company.

Our company culture is our top priority. As a way to celebrate our wonderful employees and our Great Place to Work® Certification, SeaComm staffers were treated to lunch and relaxed their attire by purchasing a celebratory t-shirt for each of them to wear along with jeans (if they chose).

Marketing & Business Development News

We are proud to be the recipient of two prestigious Diamond Awards, announced during the annual conference for the Marketing & Business Development Council of America’s Credit Unions. The credit union won the first in overall “Social Media” for credit unions with assets of $500 million to $1 billion, and second as Category’s Best “Diamond in the Rough”, for our “Plunky’s aMAZEing Race” sweepstakes.

The annual March sweepstakes enabled SeaComm Facebook followers to solve daily puzzles, earning entries for one $500 prize. Plunky’s aMAZEing Race Sweepstakes was open to all SeaComm members and residents within the credit union’s charter area, which includes Northern New York State and Vermont.

“We are proud to successfully connect to the community through our social media presence,” said Scott A. Wilson, SeaComm President & Chief Executive Officer. “Chantel’s technical savvy and creativity make our social media effective, fresh and best in class.”

MAC Award

SeaComm will also be taking home the MAC Award again this year for our Social Media platform!

Even though we have been notified by the judges of the MAC Awards, we will not know our award placement category until after the 2024 MAC conference being held in Hollywood, CA on September 11th.

“The Marketing Association of Credit Unions (MAC) knows that successful marketing is a lot tougher than it looks - we just make it look easy! That’s why we want to highlight and award the marketers who really step up their game and create terrific campaigns with tangible results.”

Happy Semi-Retirement Jerry Manor!

After nearly 22 years of dedicated service to SeaComm, Jerry Manor has decided to slow down a bit! Those of us who are lucky to know Jerry will understand when I say, “Jerry-slow down? We will believe it when we see it”! The good news however, is that he remains a SeaComm employee, albeit on a part time basis. We are happy to accept any time Jerry is willing to give SeaComm and the communities we serve!

Jerry started his career with SeaComm in the marketing realm, and later moved into managing the Business Development aspect of the department. He is also the voice you have come to know through our radio ads, interviews, Facebook live events and remains in portions of our phone system.

Jerry, we wish you all the best and hope you enjoy your much deserved (semi) retirement!

Summer Grant Program Recipients

SeaComm recently awarded four entrepreneurs with a summer grant. Congratulations to Caramia Carista from Norwood, Cody Lechner and Tess Cannamela from Potsdam, and Alicen James from Plattsburgh. Each entrepreneur received a $500 grant.

Caramia Carista of Norwood, currently owns a 2 time nominated, people’s choice podcast on Spotify called "Caramia Carista’s Passing It On!" She interviews athletes, artists, and business owners, helping to pass on their stories. Caramia also takes questions from her listeners to pass along to her guests. She has a broad range of listeners aging from 18 to 77 years old. Majoring in English and journalism at SUNY Potsdam and working in local radio, Caramia dreams of broadcasting and will use the grant to expand her current audience through advertising initiatives.

Cody Lechner of Potsdam, wants to start his own pressure washing business. His plan is to start small with side walks around the area, eventually growing the business with his father and younger brother, to wash buildings and other structures. Cody has already purchased a pressure washer and will use the grant money to expand his equipment, allowing him to do a variety of jobs. Cody says he looks forward to building a business with his family, while learning how to successfully run the business as well.

Tess Cannamela of Potsdam, is an artist looking to sell high quality prints of her original artwork. Her current work was created for a high school senior project. She submitted her work and it was displayed at the Potsdam Public Library. At the suggestion of her teacher, she will start to sell prints of her work. Tess will use the grant money to cover startup and printing costs. She will eventually create other pieces as well. Tess will be majoring in art at SUNY Potsdam in the fall.

Alicen James of Plattsburgh, was inspired by her love of acrylic nails to start her own business. She said that she would rather invest in creating a nail business of her own rather than spending money elsewhere. Alicen plans to attend CV-Tech and get her cosmetology license. After that, she will start her business in her home, ultimately opening her own shop in the future. She has saved up for some supplies, but the summer grant will allow her to fully stock up and purchase equipment.

“SeaComm is pleased to partner with these four young entrepreneurs through the Summer Grant Program,” states Sherry Thompson, SeaComm’s Senior Vice President of Lending Operations and Risk Management. “This opportunity provides these ambitious individuals with resources to assist in taking their ventures to the next level. This grant is not just about financial support, but also about fostering innovation, creativity and dedication to the process. We look forward to hearing of each success story as the summer closes.”

Report of the President & Chief Executive Officer

As we move well into the third quarter, SeaComm continues to be on target to meet our expected forecast set forth in the FY24 board-approved operating budget. Member satisfaction, staff engagement and overall profitability continues to remain above expectation.

Our Financial Position Today Continues to Remain Solid

Net income as of June 30, 2024 was $3,348,040. Our net assets at the end of the quarter were $798,495,854. At the same time, net operating expenses YTD were 2.06%, well below the 3% targeted goal set by the credit union’s budget. However, dividend expense is up more than $1.3 million compared to budget, giving a good return to our members. Today, we have $115-million in unrealized earnings. Capital remains a key component to our financial health, as it is necessary to grow adequate reserves so we are able to withstand any uncertainty as our assets continue to increase and thereby be viable well into the future. As a large financially complex credit union, we are required to maintain a risk-based capital ratio at minimum of 10%. Today, we stand at 26.16%, well above what is required by the National Credit Union Administration.

As we end our second year of a higher rate cycle with prime currently at 8.50%, we have continued to ensure we look critically at our rate offerings. The Federal Reserve hiked interest rates eleven times between March 2022 and July 2023 for a total of 525 basis points. During this time, one of the areas we have not made any increased loan rate adjustment is in our credit card and unsecured rates. Both remain at where they were prior to start of the increase rates in 2022. We recognize that an increase in these two products would have an adverse effect on our membership, so we chose to leave them at their current rates. During the same period, we offered a number of certificate of deposit specials, which included the ability to stack on the best rate using enhanced loyalty rewards and since September 2022, more than $140 million were deposited in those products, garnering our members a better of rate on their deposits.

Bauer Financial, an independent financial rating company, awarded us their Superior Five-Stars. They analyze the performance of U.S. Banks and Credit Unions. The star ratings classify each credit union based upon a complex formula which factors in relevant data including, but not limited to: capital, historical trends, loan delinquencies, differences in the book and market values of the investment portfolio, profitability, repossessed assets, reserves, charge-offs, regulatory compliance and asset quality. It has deemed SeaComm as safe, financially sound, and that we are operating well above regulatory capital requirements.

Annual Meeting

In my report at this year’s annual meeting held in May, we were able to announce 2023 was another solid year for SeaComm. Highlights for the previous year, which included earnings exceeding budget, membership growth at nearly 3 percent, continued increase market share penetration with our newest location in Watertown, NY, as well as a solid year for our SeaComm Personal Advisor Services with over $81- million of assets under management. We also saw an increase in our mobile check deposits year over year of 10% and dividend expense overall was up $2-million over the previous year. Member satisfaction remained consistently high with an overall quality loop score of 6.81 out of 7. The overall message we relayed was that SeaComm is committed to ensuring our members get the very best in member service, core products and a diverse delivery channel model at any point it is needed.

Two Directors were re-elected to 3-year terms, as well as the Board re-appointed the current members of the Supervisory Committee to an additional one-year term. A podcast recapping the 2023 meeting is available on our website.

Page 9

Earlier this year, our employees were able to participate in our annual employee engagement survey process through Great Place to Work. This is the 12th consecutive year. We were very happy to report that after we received the results, 90% of our employees say that overall SeaComm is a great place to work. Some of what we learned is that 96% felt good about the way we contribute to the community; 93% stated that management is honest and ethical in its business practices; running the business; 96% say when you join the company, you are made to feel welcome; it was also said, management has a clear of where the organization is going and how to get there; and 92% say they are proud to tell others they work for SeaComm. We are extremely proud to be included within this privileged group across the country. We held a special recognition day on June 28th for all staff, whereby we provided doughnuts in the morning, jeans could be worn, a special Great Place to Work t-shirt was provided to wear and had lunch delivered. In August, we also held our annual trip to the Great Escape for staff and their families.

Charter Day 2024

As we finished our 60th anniversary on June 6th, we held a special recognition for our last remaining charter member Earl Jackson. We surprised him with cake, a basket of SeaComm swag and, as part of this celebration, each tool box located in each of our retail branches have a plaque naming the original ten who signed to begin what we have today.

Earl M. Jackson • James G. Capell • Paul R. Catlin • James R. Ellis Harold H. Guile • Carl L. MacDonald •Darrell Mills • Max M. Ryan • Frank Sequin • John Zakarauskas

On behalf of the Board of Directors, management and staff, we are grateful to our, more than 54,800 members who have put their trust in us and we will continue to work diligently to remain strong in order to be able to serve well into the future.

Business Spotlight

In support of local business members, SeaComm highlights small business owner stories in the quarterly business newsletter called “Your Bottom Line.” Here are the recaps of the first and second quarters of 2024:

High Point

Downtown Massena has experienced a resurgence over the last several years, with plenty of new businesses filling once-empty storefronts. Spencer Beckstead, a Massena native and owner of High Point clothing store, is one of many small business owners in the community who have contributed to this new growth.

Spencer opened High Point in November 2022. The location, which was previously an eye care office, had been remodeled into a clothing shop, so the storefront and interior were ideal. “I really wanted to open up a store and do something in downtown Massena,” Spencer said. The store specializes in athletic and casual wear for both men and women. You can also find a variety of other items as you shop, including candles, hats, sunglasses and much more. Recently, High Point became an authorized retailer for Lululemon, a popular active wear brand. The authorized retailer status allows the store to sell a broad variety of a certain brand’s clothing items and products. Spencer leases the space and has turned it into a family business, working with his mother, Paula. Spencer noted that he can always count on his family. “I’ve got a lot of support from my parents,” he said.

Local residents have embraced High Point as one of the preferred specialty clothing retailers in the community. While word of mouth can be very helpful for a small business that is looking to grow, having a good handle on the finances is another important component. Opening a business while working with a financial institution that you can count on alleviates some of the difficulties.

Spencer had already been a member of SeaComm before he opened High Point. He decided to go with a local financial institution he was familiar with, and open up a business account. Spencer noted, “SeaComm made it very easy to set up a business account. It’s right here in town and I’ve been a member with them since I was a kid.” The ease and convenience provided by his credit union helped Spencer start the business he wanted.

If you’re in the market for stylish, brand name active wear, look no further than High Point located at 48 Main Street in Massena. The shop is open Monday, 11am-5pm, and Wednesday through Saturday, 11am-5pm. For more updates and to view the latest in stock, follow them on Facebook @HighPointMassena.

High Peaks Brew

In an increasingly busy world, people look for convenience to go along with their schedules. That is why industries like technology, automobiles, and communications have all adapted to make life easier. The food and beverage industry has also worked to improve efficiency with increased numbers of mobile restaurants, otherwise known as food trucks. But what about coffee? The caffeinated beverage that is a staple among most people has also become mobilized. One such example is Rebekah Hilpl and her coffee truck High Peaks Brew in Plattsburgh, NY. Rebekah has steady clients and regularly attracts new customers wherever she pops up in the area. Her dream of becoming a business owner was realized four years ago and she hasn’t looked back.

Rebekah, like most adults, is a coffee lover, “Coffee was always a beverage that I had enjoyed,” she said. The thought of combining her aspirations to own her own business with her affection for the caffeinated drink led her to a great idea, but she had to learn. She said, “After doing lots of research about the coffee/food truck industries, I fell in love with the idea.” Rebekah found an old camper on Facebook marketplace and the owners were very generous. She told them about her plan to make a coffee truck and gave her the camper for nothing, which Rebekah took as a sign, “This act of kindness gave me more confirmation that I had chosen the right path!” With the help of her dad and cousin, renovations began in March of 2020, and in November of that year, Rebekah opened High Peaks Brew for the first time at the Cadyville Rec Park, serving coffee and homemade baked goods to the public.

Rebekah’s favorite part of High Peaks Brew is connecting with her customers and the community. “For most people, coffee is the highlight of their morning and I love being able to be a part of that,” she said. Based on her popularity in Plattsburgh and the surrounding areas, and the fact she had to open a second coffee truck in December 2023, is proof that the community truly appreciates the service she is providing, “We mainly set up at various locations around Plattsburgh, but we also provide our services for weddings, corporate events, college orientations, bridal showers, and more.”

When Rebekah opened her second coffee truck, SeaComm was there to help her out. “My experience with SeaComm as a business member has been fantastic.” she said, “They provided me with funding to help complete the necessary renovations.” With the credit union’s assistance, Rebekah has turned her dream of a coffee truck into a thriving business with deep community ties.

We were honored to have contributed $50,000 to the Massena Arts and Theater Association (MATA) to aid in the restoration of the Massena Schine Theater in downtown Massena. Our contribution will be earmarked specifically for the refurbishment of the vintage marquee which will be remounted on the front of Massena’s classic, pre-depression era theater. We look forward to seeing the lights of the Marquee once again lit.

The fair is a staple of the community and operates with help from volunteers and donors like SeaComm.

Thompson Park Zoo

SeaComm recently donated $5,000 to the Thompson Park Zoo. The funds will be used to support the zoo’s Butterfly exhibit. The “SeaComm Butterfly House” is an attraction that runs from spring through late summer. The exhibit allows visitors to experience many native butterfly species up close for a one of a kind educational experience. Before the Butterfly House opens, a team of staff and volunteers restores the exhibit to create a home for over 10 different butterfly species and multiple types of plants.

Pictured from left are Butterfly House Attendant Kalli Loveland, SeaComm Watertown Branch Manager Jess Roach, Zoo Board member Dr. Al Gianfagna, Zoo Volunteer Erin Brislan, and Interim Executive Director Mark Irwin.

SeaComm contributes to several groups and local charities in a given year. Some examples are: a donation of $1,000 to the Essex Police Employees Association, $5,000 to Hospice of Jefferson County, $1,200 to the City of Plattsburgh to support community events throughout 2024 and $2,500 to the Ogdensburg Library, replacing a stolen lawn mower, ensuring proper equipment was available to continue caring for the library grounds.

"Do some good"

Employee Volunteer Program

Our Malone branch took a day away from their usual work routines to do some good in the community. They volunteered their time to help clean up the Morningside Cemetery by raking, cleaning out brush, pruning trees, weed whacking, and removing rubbish. In addition, they scrubbed the gravestone of former Vice President William A. Wheeler who is buried there. He was a Malone native and served as a United States Vice President from 1877-1881.

Their volunteer time was backed by our Do Some Good Program, which enables our staff to take a day “out of the office” to help a charity or not-for-profit cause of their choice within the communities we serve.

You are some bunny special

The staff members of our Ogdensburg branch participated in the Seaway Spring Festival in April. We are proud of the amazing job they did in showing off their creativity, while representing SeaComm.....AND bringing home the first place trophy for having the best decorations of the event!

Their bright “beachy” outfits along with themed decorations, certainly got us geared up for the very warm summer weather we have been experiencing.

Great job Ogdensburg!
